25th Anniversary of Pink Ribbon Campaign
Worldwide, the month of October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month. This year in particular marks 25 years of the Pink Ribbon Campaign which is a worldwide campaign that has raised much awareness on early detection and treatment of breast cancer. The students and staff of Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Colombo marked this on the 31st of October. This programme saw everyone wearing the pink ribbon in support of the campaign. Further, Prof. Kamani H. Tennekoon, the senior most researcher of IBMBB working on breast cancer research, spoke on the need for awareness and the large strides made in breast cancer treatment owing to successful breast cancer screening and research programs. Prof. Tennekoon further mentioned the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic tests that are available at IBMBB that help people identify their susceptibility to hereditary forms of breast cancer. The event was organized by the students involved in breast cancer research and the Business Development Unit of the IBMBB.
