Guest Lecture to commemorate World Cancer Day 2018
World Cancer Day is commemorated the world over, annually, on the 4th of February. It is a day dedicated to raise awareness on the early detection and treatment options regarding the disease. The theme for the year 2018 ‘We can. I can’, highlights the collective efforts required in the fight against cancer.
The Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB) of the University of Colombo, is a post-graduate research institute that specializes in an array of research areas, one of which is the genetics of breast cancer. The institute has conducted research focusing on hereditary and non-hereditary forms of breast cancer amongst the Sri Lankan population.
In keeping with the above theme and significance of World Cancer Day, the Business Development of IBMBB together with the students currently working on cancer research, hosted a guest lecture for all staff and students of the institute. The guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Kanishka de Silva, a renowned Consultant Oncological Surgeon from the National Cancer Institute in Maharagama, who is also a senior collaborator on many of the research projects at the IBMBB focusing on cancer. The talk delivered by Dr. de Silva, titled “Breast Cancer: the past, present and future” drew on his vast experiences and knowledge as a surgeon and a researcher to bridge the gap between research and clinical findings. The talk took the audience through a journey that analysed historical and past approaches to breast cancer, while appreciating the present developments taking place in this field.
