Research Programmes on Parasitic and Infectious Diseases

Parasitic and infectious diseases still contribute significantly to the disease burden of Sri Lankan population. A long standing disease, lymphatic filariasis, though is not fatal by itself has considerable morbidity and treatment options are limited. Leptospirosis (rat fever ) and Dengue fever prevalence has recently increased alarmingly and both conditions are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Delayed diagnosis and lack of understanding of the mechanisms underlying disease process are responsible for higher number of deaths seen with these two diseases. Several research programmes are in place to address these issues.
